Manager unlicensed and dangerous

A depot manager who did not hold the right forklift licence has been prosecuted and fined after he ran over a worker while driving a forklift.

The depot manager was reversing the forklift, which had a faulty reversing alarm, when the incident occurred in February 2011.

The worker was standing behind the forklift, unaware that the vehicle was reversing. Another worker called out and tried unsuccessfully to pull him out of the way, says WorkSafe Western Australia in a media statement.

The worker was knocked over and the forklift ran over his left leg, dislocating his patella and causing significant abrasions and bruising.

The depot manager had failed to obtain the appropriate High Risk Work Licence required for operating the forklift, WorkSafe WA says.

He was prosecuted and pleaded guilty in the Perth Magistrates Court. He was fined $1000 and ordered to pay $1728 in costs.

Last month, Massena Pty Ltd, the depot manager’s employer, was prosecuted for the same incident. It pleaded guilty and was fined $20,000.
