First safe rates order issued

The first draft safe pay rates order for transport drivers has been issued by the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal.

The draft order covers drivers working in retail goods, livestock, bulk grain and long-distance travel sectors, as defined in the Road Transport and Distribution Award 2010 that has been in force since 1 July 2012.

Also covered are drivers working in long-distance operations in the private transport industry as defined in the Road Transport (Long Distance Operations) Award 2010 that has been in force since 1 July 2012.

Whistleblower protection, a drug and alcohol policy, payment times and safe driving plans are among the draft provisions.

The draft order is open for public comment until 26 July and public hearings will be conducted from 13 to 16 August.
