Asbestos eradication a step closer

Legislation to establish the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency was introduced into federal parliament last week.

The Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency Bill 2013 sets out the functions of the new agency, including implementing the national strategic plan, providing ministerial advice on asbestos safety and monitoring and promoting research about asbestos safety.

The agency, among other changes, was recommended in the Asbestos Management Review released by the federal government last year.

The Bill also establishes the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Council, which will provide advice to the agency’s CEO and the relevant Minister. It will comprise: a chair; representatives from Commonwealth, state, territory and local governments; and four other members appointed by the Minister.
