Happy New Year and welcome to 2013! We hope you enjoyed the barbecues, the beach, the cricket, the Boxing Day sales or any other enjoyable traditions of the Australian summer!

It’s going to be another interesting year as we move towards more harmonised work health and safety legislation with Tasmania and South Australia the latest states to commence the new WHS laws. The start of the year is always an optimal time to take stock – is your business up to date with the new WHS legislation and responsibilities? Have you considered a gap audit of your workplace? Have you thought about whether you (or your staff) need to up skill this year to keep on top of the changes in WHS or perhaps further your career?

NSCA have some exciting new initiatives to share over the coming months, so stay tuned to our fortnightly Safe -T- Bulletin.

New laws in seven jurisdictions

The model work health and safety laws are now in force in seven jurisdictions.

South Australia and Tasmania joined NSW, Queensland, the Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory and the Commonwealth on January 1. Read more »

Heat risk soars

Recent high temperatures have prompted calls for employers and workers to review the risk of heat stress.

As temperatures soared in some jurisdictions last week, workplaces were urged to respond accordingly. Read more »

Rural doctors in need

Mental health risks facing rural doctors and medical students on rural placements will be estimated in a national survey in February.

Beyondblue is sending surveys to all rural doctors and a sample of other doctors. Read more »

Hearts and minds on the line

The quad bike death toll climbed to 18 in 2012, while stakeholders continued to debate safety solutions.Half the deaths involved rollovers and six happened at work.

The results of a discussion forum released in late December highlight the lack of consensus that has dogged the quad bike safety debate. Read more »

Death toll rises

Deaths in Ireland's construction and fishing sectors have increased, according to recent statistics.

Construction recorded eight deaths in 2012, up two on the previous year, says figures from Ireland's Health and Safety Authority. Read more »
