Ten ways to boost people and productivity
How well you manage, develop, motivate and engage the willing contributions of your staff are key factors in achieving high-level and high-quality performance.
Here are ten strategies for improving your people management and productivity.
These strategies are drawn from the recent benchmarking report, Management Matters in Australia: Just How Productive are We?.
- Build into your organisation’s philosophy and mission a commitment to the skill development, well-being and effectiveness of all employees
- Determine the current state of your management practices across the business and decide where you can make improvements
- Build long-term commitment, strategies and initiatives for improving professional management capabilities
- Identify staff performance gaps and act to close those gaps
- Regularly review objectives, strategies and processes associated with people management practices and make changes accordingly
- Encourage, motivate and nurture your people and monitor their satisfaction and commitment regularly
- Encourage and develop a greater sense of accountability amongst employees
- Decentralise decision-making processes, foster self-managing work environments and aim for a team of employees who can achieve their work without you needing to tell them what to do all the time
- Develop internal policies and processes to formally and regularly assess and evaluate your management performance against objective criteria for employee development
- Provide senior managers with adequate training and support to provide effective vision and direction for your ‘people management’ strategies

Are we practising what we preach?
Having respectful workplace policies is no guarantee of achieving respectful behaviour.
Discrepancies between respectful policies and behaviour are highlighted in the findings of the 2007/08/09 ProActive ReSolutions employee questionnaires.
